Gary Ozias Miniature Show Judge and Workshop Instructor |
About the Artist Although born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1947, Gary Ozias spent most of his early years in rural Massachusetts. He is a retired language arts teacher who has loved painting and other visual arts since he was a young boy. He graduated from Worcester State College in Massachusetts in 1969, taught for a brief period on the East Coast, and then moved to Downs, Kansas where he has lived ever since. His father, Stanley, was one of the foremost engravers in the United States and gave Gary much of his early encouragemnet and training. After putting his art aside for a number of years, he picked it up again in the late 1970s and has been drawing and painting since then. He began his professional art career by opening his Prairie Wind Art Gallery in Downs, Kansas in 1983, but it actually remained an avocation as he continued to devote his full energies to his teaching until 2001. Since then, he has been painting full time in either the studio or outdoor pleinaire painting. Gary has won numerous awards and recognition for his painting. His work hangs in public and private collections from coast to coast in the United States and also in numerous other countries. He works in a variety of media, but most of his recent work has been in pastels and oils. His painting is representational but also has a painterly touch to it. He loves to capture the essence and feel of the weather conditions which envelop a landscape. His subjects range from mid-western and western landscapes to wildlife and still life. He is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a Master Pastelist in the Mid America Pastel Society. He also belongs to Oil Painters of America.
